チャールズ・ダーウィンの言葉

以下は、進化論を提唱したイギリスの博物学者、チャールズ・ダーウィン(Charles Darwin 1809-1882)が、1859年に、彼の友人であった イギリスの植物学者、ジョーセフ・ダルトン・フッカー(Joseph Dalton Hooker 1817-1911) に送った手紙の一部です。
"How I wish you would work out the Pacific floras…but of all places in the world I should like to see a good flora of the Sandwich Islands. I would subscribe 50 pounds to any collector to go there and work at these islands…I think it is the most isolated group in world, and the islands themselves well isolated from each other. " 「太平洋の植物相について解き明かしてくれればいいなと切に思う。・・・世界中に色んなところがあるが、サンドイッチ諸島（ハワイ諸島）の植物相をみたい。そこへ行って植物採集をしてくれる人がいたら50ポンドの援助をするんだが。・・・そこは世界で一番孤立した島々の集まりで、しかも、そこにある島々は、島と島との間が十分に離れていると思う。」
ダーウィンはハワイ諸島には来ませんでしたが、ハワイの自然の驚くほどの多様性に目を向けていたようです。
